Top Roof Maintenance Tips from Season to Season

Commercial Roof

While it may be easier to ignore it, you shouldn’t wait for a problem to arise to pay attention to your roof. Taking care of your roof system isn't just about responding to issues; it’s about taking preemptive measures sometimes, too.

No matter the season, there’s something you can be doing to ensure you’re roof system stays in top shape. And while routine maintenance may seem like a hassle, it can save you a lot of money and bigger headaches in the future.

So, to help you ensure you’re taking the best care of your roof system, our roofing contractors at All American Roofing & Remodeling wanted to share what you can do throughout every season no matter what type of roof you have.

Roof Maintenance in the Spring

We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, right? Well, the concept extends beyond organizing the inside of your house. To ensure your home stays in top shape, focus your spring cleaning endeavors on your home exterior, too.

So, what are some activities you can complete during the spring months, so you can be sure your roof is in good shape? Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Clean Out Gutters: Be sure leaves and other debris that accumulated during the winter months are cleared out of your gutters now that the weather warmed up enough to be on your roof.
  • Inspect for Mold or Mildew: Due to the rain and snow, wintertime can lead to mold and mildew growth on your roof, which can lead to bigger problems down the road.
  • Replace Damaged Shingles: The winter weather can wreak the most havoc on your shingles, so be sure to inspect them and deal with any issues. You should also make sure the soffit and fascia are in good shape.

Roof Maintenance in the Summer

As you move into the summer months, your home has different elements to contend with on a daily basis. Namely, the sun! To ensure your roof is ready for summer, the first thing you should do is look for holes, dents, or any other space that small creatures and pests could find for respite from the sun.

You should also be sure your attic insulation and ventilation systems are up to standard, so you don’t have to worry about heat gain as the sun beats down on your roof system. If you have skylights, be sure those are properly sealed, too.

Roof Maintenance in the Fall

When the weather begins to cool off, there are a handful of tasks you should do to take care of your roof. Already, this time of year is perfect for scheduling a roof inspection, so you can get an updated status on the current quality of your roof. That way, you can handle any issues before you’re left battling the extreme temperatures and climate.

Specific tasks you can undergo to keep your roof in good shape include:

Roof Maintenance in the Winter

Working on your roof during the winter months presents some challenges thanks to the cold weather and often slippery conditions. That said, there are still some steps you can take to keep your roof in good condition.

Unless there is a serious problem, you should probably avoid doing any big roof projects, but a couple things you can do include removing snow from your roof as soon as possible and checking for any sagging that could become a bigger issue down the road.
